Konjunktioner

Konjunktioner binder ihop satser. Jfr. engelskans 'conjoin' = binda ihop. De kan vid inlärning ibland vara svåra att skilja från adverb och prepositioner. Två huvudkategorier finns:

• samordnande (binder ihop huvudsatser) och
• underordnande (binder ihop huvudsats med bisats (underordnad sats)):

Samordnande

Konjunktion	Sv. ex	En. ex
and		We went to Edinburgh and then continued to Inverness.
but		I'll lend you the money, but I want it back next week.
or		Give me back my money or I'll bust your kneecaps!
either... or neither... nor		You can either take the tube from Lancaster Gate or continue to Queensway. The shop assistant neither said 'hello' nor 'thank you'. That's rude.

Underordnande

Underordnande konjunktioner kan ytterligare delas in på flera sätt:

Tid	after, as, as long as, as soon as, before, directly, hardly... when, now (that), once, scarcely... when, since, till, until, when, while, whilst	... när ... ... knappt... förrän...	We'll have a big party when this blows over. She had hardly finished her speech, when she was bombarded with questions from the journalists.
Fråga	if, whether	... om (= huruvida)...	Ask her if/whether she is from New York [or not].
Villkor	as long as, if, in case, provided (that), providing (that), so long as, suppose, supposing, unless	... om (= bara om)...	Ask her if she is from New York. If she is not, don't bother, she won't know how to get to Madison Square Garden.
Jämförelse	as, as if, as though, than, the... the, the way		That's about as useful as a hole in the head.
Avsikt, följd	in order to, so, so that, so... much		She closed the door, so that they would not be disturbed by the noise outside. She dropped her crutch, so that the person behind her tripped over it.
Orsak	as, since, because		Since your iPad is not working, you will have to use your pencil.
Motsats	although, even if, even though, though, while, whereas		We ended up having lunch at McDonald's, although we had booked a table at the Ritz.
